Renovation & Construction

After years of strategic planning under our Strategic Plan framework, we are excited to announce the construction of The Inn of Tomorrow. Inn CEO Jennie Lucca shared updates about the project with our Board and Trustees in the fall of 2024; please read the Fall 2024 letter and FAQs here.

During construction, The Inn will remain open 24 hours, seven days a week. Family dinner service, thoughtful treasure workshops, and other activities will continue on a smaller scale; contact us to learn more about the project and how you can stay engaged in the coming months.

Project Updates

Winter 2026

We are proud to announce that Phase 1 construction of Building 62 will be officially completed by the end of February 2026. Our families are now preparing for the transition from Building 62A to their beautiful new “Place Like Home” in Building 62, with the move scheduled for completion by March.

This milestone represents more than renovated spaces—it embodies the generosity and unwavering commitment of our community to children and young adults participating in life-changing clinical research at NIH.

What’s Next: Phase 2

With Phase 1 behind us, we are excited to begin Phase 2, which will include:

Renovation of Building 62A, including the consolidation of family program and resident services on one main hallway, to enhance our capacity to serve families.
Construction of the Merck Foundation Tower of Hope and resident wing
A new entrance and family residential wing to welcome even more families
The construction of the Danaher Bridge from the Clinical Center sidewalk on Center Drive to the new family reception area in the Turtle Wing.

Fall 2025 Updates

As we settle into the rhythm of autumn, we are filled with gratitude and excited to share some updates from The Inn. This season of transformation mirrors the growth we are experiencing—both in the construction of The Inn of Tomorrow and in the generous spirit that continues to fuel our vision.

Progress Updates: Together, We Are Making Strides!

Contractors are completing important stormwater improvements outside of the original building.

Construction of the new playhouse and terrace is progressing. The inside playroom will be doubled in size, and access to the playground from the second floor will be improved.

The new sports court (previously located adjacent to the parking lot) is really taking shape and will feature a new walkway that runs around the playground, nestled close to the woods on Cedar Lane.

Crews are installing drywall inside the building, and it is exciting to see spaces like the new volunteer and staff lounge and second-floor walkway out to the terrace take shape. With work on the original building scheduled for completion in the spring of 2026, we eagerly anticipate the beginning of Phase 2 expansion work.

Summer 2025 Updates

Progress Updates

Young Adult Residence: On-campus across West Drive from The Inn, construction continues with HVAC and ductwork installation, structural steel for the new elevator, and plumbing rough-ins. It has experienced delays due to technical redesigns in response to utility and facility infrastructure upgrades. This phase is now projected to be complete by Spring 2027. The Inn’s phase, which includes furnishing and fit-out, is now projected to be completed by Summer 2026. Throughout this past Spring, extensive site work continued with upgrading underground utilities.

Exterior Renovations: Demolition continued with the removal of the Porte Cochere, the stone sign at the parking lot entrance, and the rear glass wall in the upper living room. The existing Sport Court was previously removed to provide access for emergency and service vehicles. Later in this phase, a new court will be installed at the rear of the playground.

Interior Renovations: The first floor of the North (original) Building has been demolished, with most ceilings, walls, and flooring removed. Work has also begun on the second-floor guest rooms. New structural steel has been installed, as has a second-floor balcony in the Living Room.

Landscaping: Tree removal along West Cedar Lane is underway to allow for stormwater management improvements. Once Phase 1 is complete, new trees and shrubs will be planted to restore the landscape. This plan has been shared with the surrounding neighbors through NIH.

Whiting-Turner is projected to wrap up Phase 1 of this project (renovation of the north building) by late September/early October of this year.
