About The Children’s Inn

The Children’s Inn at NIH is a private, nonprofit residential “Place Like Home” for children and their families participating in pediatric research at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Md. The Inn reduces the burden of illness by providing free lodging and support services as well as through therapeutic, educational, and recreational programming at no cost to families. Since opening in 1990, families from across the United States and around the world have made The Inn their home during clinical trials. As a partner in discovery and care with the NIH, The Inn strives for the day when no family endures the heartbreak of a seriously ill child.

Visiting & On-Site Guidelines

Check-in & Escort

All visitors must check in at the front desk and be accompanied by a member of The Inn's communications team at all times on the premises.

Written Consent Required

Every person photographed, filmed, or interviewed must provide prior written consent to Children's Inn staff before any recording begins.

NIH Campus Entry

Enter via the NIH Visitors Gate or Commercial Entrance on Rockville Pike. Camera equipment? The commercial entrance is strongly recommended for smoother security clearance.

Free Parking

Visitors may park for free in The Inn's lot. Provide your car make, model, color, and license plate in advance to receive a hang-tag permit on arrival.

Access to The Children's Inn does not grant access to other areas of the NIH campus. Separate arrangements must be made with NIH and/or NIH Clinical Center communications teams. Children's Inn staff may also discuss additional safety precautions to protect the health of our vulnerable pediatric patients.

For smoother campus entry with advance notice, Children's Inn staff may be able to arrange expedited access. Contact us early — at least 48 hours before your visit.
